About the Film

On the run from her villainous uncle, a young girl escapes to the desert disguised as a boy. There she meets the boy she loves, who is also in exile, but her disguise complicates their relationship.

Director Carlyle Stewart is a resident of Traverse City, MI, a House Manager at the State Theatre in Traverse City and a 10-year volunteer manager at the Traverse City Film Festival. Academy Award-nominated actor (and star of the film) Graham Greene is a resident of Stratford, ON. Several other members of the cast and crew are also residents of Traverse City.

Director Bio:

Carlyle Stewart was born in Arlington, VA and is a graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, VA. He is an independent film producer (the documentary Socially Inept), writer/director (As You Like It) and amateur film critic. He currently resides in Traverse City, MI.

Director Statement:

As You Like It is best described as John Wayne meets Shakespeare in the spirit of Gus Van Sant.

Set in a contemporary American west of cowboys, Indians and ex-hippies (and filmed in Death Valley, CA utilizing the original language and an all-male cast including Academy Award nominee Graham Greene), As You Like It emphasizes themes and ideas present in Shakespeare's text that are lost in most modern adaptations.

Eighteen years in the making, As You Like It blends the latest in independent digital film production with traditional stage traditions and the scope of classic Hollywood filmmaking to create a unique cinematic experience.
